Introduction
In 1986, an educational and research center was established with the capacity to admit associate degree students in Nursing and Laboratory Sciences. In 1988, the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery was founded to admit students in Bachelor’s Nursing and Associate Midwifery programs. Following the approval of the Medicine program by the Council for University Expansion in 1990 and the integration of the Regional Health and Treatment Organization, the Kurdistan School of Medical Sciences was established. In 1992, through the merger of the Faculties of Medicine, Nursing, and Midwifery, it was promoted to the Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences and Health Services.
Other major achievements of the university include:
- Establishment and admission of residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, Surgery, and Emergency Medicine.
- Training PhD students in Epidemiology, Molecular Bacteriology, Cellular and Molecular Sciences, and Environmental Health.
- Providing opportunities for faculty development through international educational missions and establishing relevant regulations.
- Activating the Clinical Research Unit at Besat Hospital and offering research consultation services to hospital researchers throughout the week.
- Improving the university campus environment through the implementation of 15 development projects.
- Publishing an internationally indexed scientific journal and maintaining a central library.

According to the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings (2025), Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences has been ranked in the 601–800 band worldwide.
