Introduction to the Holy City of Mashhad

Mashhad is a metropolis in northeastern Iran and the center of Razavi Khorasan Province. This city was the capital of Iran during the Afsharid era. Based on the 2016 General Population and Housing Census, with a population of 3,057,679, it is the second most populous city in Iran after Tehran.

Due to the presence of the luminous shrine of Hazrat Ali ibn Musa al-Reza (AS), Mashhad hosts millions of pilgrims from both within and outside the country annually. Extensive facilities include an active international airport with numerous domestic and international flights, a modern terminal and inter-city/intra-city transportation network, the most active train station, suitable highways and roads, the highest number of hotels and guest houses in the country, and the existence of natural, historical, and tourist attractions, which attract an increasing number of compatriots to this city every year.

Furthermore, the presence of consulates from numerous Muslim countries in Mashhad indicates the wide scope of political and economic relations of those countries with Razavi Khorasan Province and Mashhad city, and their Shia nationals constitute a significant portion of Mashhad’s pilgrims. Mashhad’s attractions and amenities have also led to population growth and the development of the city, with its population having increased more than threefold since 1976 (1355 in the Iranian calendar).

Mashhad’s Economy

Mashhad’s economy is primarily based on saffron, barberry, sugar, nuts and dried fruits, as well as industrial leather (for decorative purposes) and the carpet industry. Additionally, Mashhad is the second largest automotive production hub in Iran. It’s also important to consider the revenue generated from the presence of pilgrims at the holy shrine of Imam Reza and tourists. Other significant agricultural products of Mashhad include grains, sugar beets, and forage crops. Mashhad is one of the main leather production centers in Iran. In recent years, investment in large-scale administrative, commercial, and accommodation projects has increased. With the highest number of hotels in the country, Mashhad is a major hub for tourism development in Iran, and the organization of tourism exhibitions increases public and visitor awareness of the capabilities of Razavi Khorasan Province, especially Mashhad, in this sector.

International Relations

Currently, active consulates in Mashhad include the Consulate General of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Consulate General of the Republic of Iraq, the Consulate General of the Republic of Turkmenistan, the Consular Affairs Office of the Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan (based in Tehran), the Consulate General of the Republic of Turkey, and the Consulate General of the Kyrgyz Republic.
