Introduction
The first institution of higher education in Gilan was established in 1965 with the opening of the Higher School of Nursing. The Nursing College was officially founded in 1976. Gilan University of Medical Sciences began its activities in 1983 as the School of Medicine under the supervision of the University of Gilan. In 1986, following the establishment of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, it became independent from the University of Gilan and continued its activities as an autonomous university.
The current state of higher education in Gilan Province is by no means comparable to that before the Islamic Revolution. A comparative review of the medical education system before and after the Revolution shows that in 1978, there were only 556 students studying nursing and auxiliary nursing in a single nursing college. However, at present, 5,649 students are enrolled in eight faculties—including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, paramedical sciences, and others—across various academic levels at Gilan University of Medical Sciences. Currently, 532 faculty members, consisting of 73 professors, 145 associate professors, 291 assistant professors, and 23 instructors, are engaged in academic and research activities at the university. The growth of research centers and knowledge-based companies is among the significant achievements in the field of medical education in the province.

According to the latest Times Higher Education ranking in 2025, Gilan University of Medical Sciences has been placed in the 801–1000 ranking band.
