Introduction
The core of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences was originally established in 1959 under the name School of Medicine of the National University of Iran, as the first private medical school in the country. Following the enactment of the law establishing the Ministry of Health, Treatment, and Medical Education on March 16, 1986, and the subsequent merger of several educational and medical units affiliated with this Ministry and the National University of Iran, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences and Health Services officially began its activities in September 1986.
At present, the university hosts 11,476 students and 1,481 faculty members who are actively engaged in education, research, and clinical practice.
Ranking
According to the RUR Ranking Agency report in 2023, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences achieved 6th place nationally and 457th place globally. In this ranking, 24 Iranian institutions were listed among the world’s top universities. Moreover, based on the 2025 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the university was placed within the 601–800 global ranking band.
