Mashhad University of Medical Sciences
The holy city of Mashhad, renowned for housing the sacred shrine of the eighth Imam of the Shi’a Muslims, has long been a center of attention for Muslims worldwide. In addition to its spiritual significance, Mashhad holds a special place in Iran’s scientific and cultural history. The first proposal to establish a university in Mashhad was submitted in 1934, coinciding with the founding of the University of Tehran. Persistent efforts were made toward this goal, and due to the growing need for physicians in Khorasan Province, along with the determination of local authorities and the support of the educated public, the Prime Minister’s Office approved the initiative in 1939.
Initially, instead of a Faculty of Medicine, a Higher School of Health (Āmūzeshgāh-e ‘Ālī-ye Behdārī) was established in Mashhad. The current building of the Faculty of Medicine, which was then a six-grade state primary school named Hemmat, was allocated to this purpose. The late Professor Oberlin, then Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tehran, was appointed to oversee the establishment. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of its teaching and administrative staff and with the valuable support of the late Dr. Mostafa Habibi, Professor at the University of Tehran, the school gradually flourished. Four years later, the Ministry of Culture established similar institutions in Shiraz and Isfahan.
In 1947, renewed correspondence and actions were undertaken to expand the Higher School of Health and convert it into a Faculty of Medicine. Eventually, the Council of Ministers approved the establishment of Mashhad University, consisting of three faculties: Medicine, Literature, and Theology and Islamic Studies. The first admission notice for medical students was announced in September 1949, and the Faculty of Medicine was officially inaugurated on November 23, 1949 by the then Minister of Culture, Dr. Zangeneh. The Higher School of Health was subsequently dissolved after its final class graduated. After the Islamic Revolution, major structural reforms were implemented across ministries. In 1986, universities of medical sciences and related fields were separated from the Ministry of Science, Research, and Higher Education, and merged with the Ministry of Health to form the Ministry of Health, Treatment, and Medical Education. Consequently, the University of Mashhad was reorganized into two independent institutions: the Mashhad University of Medical Sciences and Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, each operating under its own administration.
